On the Fourth of July, Ben Appel brought me in for his party at a private residence at the Jersey Shore — about 60 guests, an evening of strolling close-up magic, and a premium close-up segment that found its own audience.
The party ran across an outdoor paver patio and the house itself, and the strolling format fit it exactly the way it's supposed to: one small group at a time, a few minutes of close-up magic each, then on to the next knot of guests. With roughly 60 people, I committed to 60 minutes in roaming format as a safeguard, but I was happy it lasted a bit longer. (I always aspire to over-deliver.)

Beyond the roaming magic, the booking reserved a 15-minute close-up segment — material I normally don't include in strolling work — intended for Ben's inner circle of up to ten guests. On the night, that segment happened a different way than planned: instead of a hand-picked group in a private room, a crowd formed organically around the performance, and they became its audience. Same material, same format — the guests simply chose themselves. It was very enjoyable because the guests were showing so much interest.

I wore a "business mystique" theme for clothing — business attire in all black.

Anyone who's driven to the shore on the Fourth knows the real risk isn't the traffic — it's arriving on time and then burning twenty minutes hunting for parking. I didn't gamble on it. I stayed nearby the night before and took a Lyft straight to the residence, which meant I walked in at exactly the arrival time the booking called for: right at the start, not early, so the entertainment didn't run out of party before the party ran out of guests.
There were very impressive food displays. The food was handled by 12th Street Catering, the full-service caterer based in Philadelphia.

Great entertainer. Great personality.
Highly recommended!
